Not Yet by Toby Slough
Design, Art Direction
Anxiety, depression, and transformation are very difficult topics to discuss. They're even more difficult to portray visually, when it comes to capturing the emotional depth and gravity of the topic accurately. Not Yet by Toby Slough is a book abundant with visual metaphor, from an extremely personal viewpoint.
The cover artwork needed to emotional, real, and raw. I created the title and chapter numbers by hand with a thicker brush, deliberately capturing beautiful details in the imperfect typographic characters. The visual of the water is two-fold: The ocean is massive, deep and dark. The chances of drowning are pretty great if you're treading water alone. Conversely, water sustains life. It renews. It cleanses. Waves of grace and mercy wash over you in the moment of surrender, with a glimmer of hope approaching from just beyond the horizon.
